Choose Your Insurance Plans Wisely

Plan Ahead

Benefits for both medical and dental insurance plans vary greatly. My colleague and friend, Dr. Peter Vanstrom, in Atlanta, GA has written some very interesting blog postings on his website exploring the extreme variations in dental benefit payments for dental procedures from different dental plans. Click this link if you’d like to read these articles that discuss the vast variations in dental benefit coverages.

The old adage that “you get what you pay for” is very true when it comes to dental insurance coverage. A less expensive plan may only cover a fraction of something as basic as a healthy dental cleaning. That may be fine for you, just appreciate the fact that lower insurance benefits payouts will mean more out-of-pocket cost for quality dental care.

Your employer and human resource department negotiate the very minute details of your plan. Your insurance company, say MetLife, may offer payment for fluoride treatment in office, but your employer may opt out of that coverage to save money up front. If that is the case, then you have to pay for that non-covered benefit.

Navigating through dental insurance coverage is a difficult task. We are available to answer any questions that you might have. Please don’t hesitate to call any time. We look forward to taking care of all of your future dental needs.

Why do dental crowns cost so much?

The Cost of CrownsMany patients ask us, “why does a crown, or cap, cost so much?” First of all, we’d like to clarify that our fees for all ceramic crowns like Emax, porcelain fused to metal crowns, inlays, onlays and full gold crowns are based on local and national fee studies. We focus on delivering long lasting, quality crown restorations at a very fair fee.

That being said, there is quite a bit of outside cost that goes into making a perfectly fitting, long lasting crown. All of our hours of continuing education updates keep us abreast of the latest improvements in materials and cements. All of the in office supplies and materials that we utilize in a crown preparation and crown delivery, or cementation, are the best available. And finally, we use only the best hand crafted crowns made by the finest labs in the USA. Many discount dental centers export their crowns to be made in lower quality crown labs in China, Puerto Rico and Central America.

We take great pride in creating long lasting, beautiful, life-like crowns that fulfill all of our patient’s demands. We look forward to continuing to provide you with great dental care.

A Dental Onlay versus a Full Coverage Dental Crown

When tooth decay destroys tooth structure, it is up to the dentist to replace the damaged tooth structure. How much tooth must be repaired is the question. It’s really no different than if a tree fell into your living room.

If the tree that fell on your house was a huge oak tree, it would cause quite a bit of damage. It might even cause so much destruction that you might have to condemn the house and simply rebuild the entire structure.

If the tree was smaller, like a pine tree, it might cause less damage. Perhaps only the living room itself was damaged and in need of structural repair, not the entire house.

A cavity in your tooth will cause destruction. A small cavity will cause less damage than a large cavity. A large cavity can result in so much tooth structure damage that the only way to save the tooth is with a full coverage dental crown. Other times, the cavity might have been caught sooner and enough tooth structure might remain so that the dentist can create a more conservative partial coverage crown, or a dental onlay.

An onlay or a crown will help the patient preserve their tooth for a lifetime. We look forward to seeing you soon for your preventive dental care visit.

Houston Dentist on Making Your Mouth Kissable On the Go

Older-Couple-and-Mistletoe-204x300The holiday season is the kissing season. You never know when you might find yourself under the mistletoe. Since the opportunity to steal a kiss could arise at any moment, your Houston dentist, Dr. Deborah Gennero, recommends keeping the following items on hand to ensure that your mouth is always kissabliy fresh.

Breath Fresheners

To guarantee fresh breath at every moment, carry some breath-freshening mints or gum. Most breath fresheners, including mouthwash, will do nothing for your overall oral health, but they may cover up bad breath issues long enough for you to get that kiss. Chewing gum can also promote saliva production, which will help keep your breath fresh. No matter which brand of gum or mints you choose, make sure that they are sugar-free.

Lip Balm

Winter weather can easily dry out and chap your lips. Chapped lips can be both unsightly and painful, and may even bleed. To prevent these misfortunes, keep your lips moisturized. Most lip balms sold in stores will do the job very well. Some contain sunscreen, which will keep your lips from becoming sunburned and reduce the risk of melanoma.

Thanksgiving-300x200There’s little doubt that the holiday season is the eating season. From the big Thanksgiving dinner that many enjoyed last month to the various parties throughout December, to another feast for many on Christmas Day, many people will be consuming more food than normal between now and New Year’s. But even as you enjoy that glass of eggnog or those Christmas cookies, it’s important to keep what all that sugar is doing to your teeth in mind. Your Houston and Katy dentist, Dr. Deborah Gennero, discusses what happens to sugar once it’s in the mouth and what you can do to make sure your teeth are healthy and strong into 2013.

Sugar, Bacteria, and Your Teeth

By itself, the sugar found in pies, cakes, fudge, and other holiday treats does not harm your teeth. However, it does provide a potent food source for the millions of microscopic bacteria that live in your mouth. After consuming the sugar, the bacteria release an acidic by-product. Unfortunately, that acid just happens to be able to destroy your tooth enamel. It is the acid that is the chief culprit in tooth decay.

shutterstock_114393424-300x200As fall progresses, the delicious foods and spices of the season make their way onto our tables and into our lattes. Just in case you thought pumpkins’ only purpose was to be carved and discarded after Halloween, your Houston dentist has compiled a list of the top ingredients that make the pumpkin an incredibly healthy choice for both your oral health, and your overall health.

What’s in a Pumpkin?

Before you stick a candle in your jack-o-lantern, take a look at the amazing bundle of vitamins and minerals this little orange gourd contains:

Zinc – Zinc contributes greatly to strong bones and teeth, and can help ward off osteoporosis. Recent studies have also found evidence that zinc supplementation in children can help ward off dental cavities by lowering the formation of plaque on teeth. Zinc is also known to help remove volatile sulfur compounds, the primary causes of bad breath. (more…)

CranberrySauce-300x204When it comes to dental advice, it’s more often that you’ll hear what you shouldn’t eat and not what you should. However, what about foods that can help fight tooth decay? Over the years, studies have shown that a wide range of consumable things might have cavity and gum disease fighting properties. Coconut oil, cheese, green tea – these are just a few of the things that hold positive powers in oral health maintenance. Today, Dr. Deborah Gennero, your Houston dentist, will highlight a holiday favorite that holds cavity-fighting compounds: the cranberry.

The Holidays and Tooth Decay

Thanksgiving Day is a time when most of us decide not to think a whole lot about what we’re going to eat. Celebration abounds, and overeating is common. Though many of the usual foods served on the holiday are savory items – like turkey, mashed potatoes, and stuffing – there are usually plenty of pies, sweet breads, and fudge to round out the meal. As you are probably already aware, sugary and acidic foods and drinks contribute to tooth decay. (more…)
